Acceptable Technology Use Policy

Every company has policies and procedures, which must be followed if you expect to remain employed.  At San Carlos High School, you must be familiar with all the rules and regulations in the student handbook and this "Acceptable Use Policy Statement". And, you must follow them if you want to remain in your CTE class!

Due to the expense of acquiring and maintaining technology for the effective education of all students, we will hold each person responsible for the proper use and care of assigned equipment. It is our expectation that all people will demonstrate respectful behavior when working with the equipment and software, yet it only takes one individual to cause serious damage at high costs to the school and taxpayers.
All Parents/Guardians and students are required to sign and date the "Acceptable Use Policy Statement" and agree to the following rules prior to students utilizing technology equipment.

The term “Technology Resources” means the District’s entire computer network, including, but not limited to, the following:  host computers, file servers, application servers, workstations, stand-alone computers, laptops, Personal Digital Assistants, palmtop computers, software, applications, data files, and all internal and external computer and communications networks (e.g., Internet, value added networks, e-mail systems) that may be accessed directly or indirectly from the District’s computer network.

  1. Students must complete the "Required network Etiquette Assignments", sign the "Acceptable Use Policy Statement" and fully understand the rules stated on this webpage before they can continue to utilized CTE technology resources.

  2. Required Nettiquette Assignments

  3. Download/print "Acceptable Use Policy Statement"

Why Have Rules?

  1. To protect equipment and users

  2. To make each machine identical so that users feel comfortable as they move from on computer to another

  3. To prolong the life of equipment

  4. To assist students with critical thinking and responsible use

  5. To honor our school’s moral and social standards expected by San Carlos’ Braves

  6. To integrate professionalism into all aspects of a CTE environment

  7. So that the CTE Policies correlate with policies stated in the student handbook

Below are the CTE's Technology Use Rules.  The CTE director will change them and add to them as occurrences warrant additions...For those students who ever question “why” we have stated the occurrence that triggered the need for the policy.  Also check your handbook for school policies related to technology.
RULE
REASON WHY
Complete and sign the "Acceptable Technology Use Statement" and Netiquette assignments.  As the Internet and World Wide Web grow and more and more of us participate in global communication, it becomes critical for each and everyone of us to follow and understand some simple rules of etiquette.
Absolutely NO social networking spaces on San Carlos Unified School District technology resources Dangers of Internet predators, as well as the possibility that college admissions officers or potential employers could view student's profiles. Students are letting too much hang out in cyberspace.

ABC News

Work on school projects using only the software & programs you are familiar with.
Students who often misuse software do so to "experiment".  CTE is preparation of work, not experimentation.  If you do not understand something, it is your responsibility to find the answer.

Just Ask!

Notice the condition of your computer when you sit down, because the teacher will check it when you leave. You will be held responsible. Who is accountable?  When you are borrowing computer usage, you are responsible for its condition when you return it.  Which means the Director, Mrs. Barnes does not want the wall paper changed or programs deleted.
THIS IS REAL LIFE
Work without conversation.  Only work in groups when instructed.
Students in CTE classes must participate in the workplace simulation. Students must view the school staff as they would view their employers and behave as if they were in a work environment. CTE computers must be maintained as a serious academic resource for school work.
Random web surfing or personal correspondences are NOT permitted on San Carlos' time. As educators, we have a lot of information you need to learn.  CTE class is not a place to socialize, it is a place to work. We expect you to behave responsibly and professionally.
The teacher has discretion to evoke computer privileges
Cutting class, personal use during class time, inappropriate treatment of equipment or inappropriate attitude disrupts other students. Majority wins and you will be asked to leave at the teacher's discretion.
At the discretion of the teacher, music may be permissible.  Please wear headphones and stay on task.
If you spend more time selecting music you are not learning.  It is easier to evoke privileges  than to grant them.

PLEASE HONOR COPYRIGHT LAWS.  IT IS SOMEONE ELSE'S WORK AND THEY DESERVE CREDIT.

ABOVE ALL, IT IS THE LAW.
