Course Name:  Intro to AG               Difficulty: Average               

Prerequisite for all AG classes and concurrent enrollment in Career Exploration

 

Grade Level:  9-12     2 Semesters    1 Credit

 This class provides career exploration and hands-on exploratory experiences in areas to include animal science: care and management of animals; plant growth and greenhouse production; natural resources and environmental management; leadership development; food science and technology.  Students will learn lab safety and must adhere to a lab safety agreement.

 

Applied Biological Systems

Course Name:  Applied Biology       Difficulty: Average – Medium          Prerequisite: Intro to AG

 

Grade Level: 10-12       2 Semesters    1 Credit          

 

This course meets the state of Arizona ’s Science standards and counts as a laboratory science for colleges.

 

Major areas of study in this class:  cell function and structure; anatomy; nutrition; biological systems in the environment; plant growth; animal growth; food safety and processing; communication and leadership skills. The course will include hands-on experiences and labs including some dissection.  Leadership development is provided through FFA.  Fulfills college entrance and district graduation requirements as a lab science and will count toward the scholastic diploma.  All students will learn lab safety and must adhere to a lab safety agreement.

 

Agriscience I

Course Name:  Agriscience I – Plant Science and Aquatic Science         Difficulty: Average-High      

 

Prerequisite: Intro to Ag, ABS          Grade Level: 11-12                2 Semesters    1 Credit

 

This course is designed to teach the fundamentals of growing plants and the fundamentals of the care, selection, and production of fish and plants that live in water.  Students will use biotechnology in propagating, grafting, cuttings, seedlings and tissue culturing.  They will be introduced to fish and plant genetics.  Students will learn how to design, and maintaining equipment and facilities, they will learn how to set up and maintain a greenhouse.  An introduction to water and soil chemistry will be made.  Students will grow bedding and container plants for school projects.  Working with fish and other aquatic species  and equipment is used extensively in this class.  Leadership and development is provided through FFA.

 

 

Agriscience II 01.0100.50

*Course Name:  Agriscience II – Renewable and Natural Resources      Difficulty:  Average-High

 

Prerequisite: Intro to AG, ABS, Agriscience I         Grade Level: 12         2 Semesters 1 Credit

 

This course is designed to teach the fundamentals of natural resource management, environmental quality protection, hydrology and water purification, wildlife management, principles in forestry, and ecology management.  Labs will include working with range, wildlife, soils, water, and other field projects.  Agribusiness principles will be taught and leadership skills will be provided through FFA.  College applications, scholarship applications, and job applications will also be a part of this class.

 

*Students who complete both Agriscience I and II can earn 1 credit of laboratory science.

 

 

Program Description -

The student will demonstrate the competencies needed to enter and advance in careers such as the food industry, Forestry, Game and Fish, agribusiness management and marketing, agricultural research and engineering, and other related fields.  Students will be introduced to the cutting–edge in technology as well as the necessary academics so that the student will have the skill and training to be highly in demand for today’s high-tech work force.

 

The program is a unique blend of courses and practical experience that builds on technical level training to give the students managerial skills to prepare them for careers in the agricultural industry.   Students in the program are expected to manage their time and their resources to complete the requirements of the program.  Classes are offered in lecture, laboratory, small group, and independent study.  Students are expected to read, study, and complete assignments (individually or in-group) in a manner that demonstrates maturity and a growing professionalism.

 

Students will be expected to be a part of the FFA Organization and to complete a Supervised AG Experience (SAE).  These experiences help the students develop skills in leadership, public speaking, problem solving, teamwork, analysis, decision making, synthesis, professionalism, people skills, and communication.

 

Essential Skills

 

The student will:

 

·        Determine the importance of agriculture in the Untied States, the world and here on the reservation.

·        Develop an appreciation for environmental concerns.

·        Identify five agricultural jobs and the skills necessary for entry into those jobs.

·        Complete a supervised occupational experience program (SAE)

·        Participate in five agricultural leadership activities through FFA Organization

·        Apply academic skills throughout the AG curriculum
